As the land available to indigenous farmers in Mesoamerica has vanished, many Mayan households have sought other means to supplement their income. Many women have come to rely on their skills as weavers, potters, and so forth. These women have banded together to form artisan cooperatives allowing them to buy their supplies in bulk in order to compete with mass-produced items.
